Late payments can severely hurt your credit scores, especially if they’re very late. Payment history counts for 35 percent of your score. It is impossible to give you an exact point amount, but it is safe to say that consumers who have had late payments are more likely to have late payments again in the future, and this likelihood lowers their FICO scores.

Remember: A credit score helps a lender to determine your credit risk. If you have a history of missing payments, your scores will suffer.
