The Association of Certified Fraud Specialists recently held a conference to discuss new trends in identity theft. The fastest growing concern? Not high tech online fraud, phishing or skimming. The ACFS is most concerned about the theft of personal records from business offices. Dentists, schools, doctors, accountants, etc. keep files of sensitive records in their offices. These files can be easily stolen in many cases and used for identity theft.
As a consumer, you should ask offices that keep records on you about their privacy policies. If it’s not necessary, don’t provide them with your social security number or other personal details. It’s also a good idea to check your credit reports regularly for signs of fraud. As a business owner, it is crucial that you take precautions to protect your customer’s data. Store records in locked file cabinets, use passwords on your computers, lock your offices and encrypt secure information when possible.
