Free auto storm damage checks

by Emily Peters on 10/25/2005

An estimated 500,000 cars were damaged during Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita. And even more cars were probably damaged in Florida this week. This means that there are
potentially hundreds of thousands of flood damaged vehicles on the market
today. If you are shopping for a car this fall, don’t get stuck with a salvaged
lemon.

Experian is offering free auto storm
damage checks online
to help you avoid these damaged cars. Simply enter the
VIN number of a car you are interested in and the report will show you if it
was listed as "salvaged" or "flood damaged." This report
will also let you know if the car was registered during the past year in a
state impacted by these storms.

It may seem improbable that a car damaged by these hurricanes could be sold at
standard prices. But an intensive detailing job could cover up the main signs
of flood damage. If you are looking for a car, be sure to look closely for
hidden mud and rust that could be signs of storm damage. In the last few weeks,
these 500,000 cars could have traveled far across the country. Car buyers in Oregon should be just as cautious as buyers in Tennessee.
