Negative credit information can remain on your credit report for 7 years. That’s a long time and is very punitive to people who have faced hardships, recovered, and now have good credit. Is there any movement to lower the number of years a negative report stays on your credit report? In my opinion reducing the time a negative report stays on your credit report by 50% would be more realistic.

I am a foreign national holding a US social security number. I lived in the US for around 3 1/2 years US in the late 1990s, always paying my bills and rent on time, using credit cards, etc. Since 1999, I have lived abroad, but I am returning to the US soon. Does this mean that I have no credit history, or is it only that negative credit information is deleted after 7 years. If anyone knows the answer, please let me know.
Thanks,
Simon

Hi Simon – You likely don’t have a credit history any more. Positive information also falls off your credit report after 7-10 years of inactivity.
