An identity thief in San Francisco has been arrested on 53 felony counts of fraud, forgery and other charges after he was discovered carrying stolen records on an iPod. The suspect, Wilson Lee, carried dozens of stolen tax returns, credit reports and loan applications stored on an iPod and a laptop. In his hotel room, investigators found over 500 stolen personal records.
"These devices create a whole new challenge for law enforcement," said Lt.
Kenwade Lee, who runs the fraud division at the San Francisco Police
Department. "It’s a whole lot easier to walk around with an iPod than a case
full of papers."
iPods are designed to carry music files, but can easily be used to store other data files just like flash drives and other portable hard drives. Consumers who store sensitive records on their own iPods should be aware that they may be at risk for identity theft if the device is lost or stolen. Also, companies that record and store customer information may start banning iPod devices because of their capability for transporting files.
