This is why it is very important to have identity theft insurance these days. Avoiding giving out social security numbers openly is a big way to prevent it. In stores when I am asked for SSN the most they will get are the last four digits along with my name so they can verify validity. If they write anything down I always ask for that paper so I may destroy it. Checking credit reports every year is also important just to make sure everything is in check. This crime is becoming very common and few actually get caught. It can take a lot of time and effort to clear your name if you become a victim too.
