New Survey from Credit.com: Despite Credit Card Law Taking Effect February 2010 - Consumers Face Numerous Account Changes


The Credit Cardholders Bill of Rights is scheduled to become law on February 22nd, but according to a new survey from Credit.com, more than 43% of consumers (up from 34% from June 2009) say their card company has made one or some combination of the following changes to a credit card account:

  • Closed their account 11% (up from 6% in June 2009 survey)
  • Increased their interest rate 27% (up from 19% in June 2009 survey)
  • Increased their fees 19% (up from 14% in June 2009 survey)
  • Lowered their credit limit 13% (down from 14% in June 2009 survey)
  • Increased their minimum payment due 15% (up from 12% in June 2009 survey)
  • Reduced their rewards program 11% (up from 9% in June 2009 survey)

This national telephone poll was conducted for Credit.com by GfK Custom Research North America from January 29-31, 2010.  A total of 1,000 interviews were completed, with roughly 500 female adults and 500 male adults. The margin of error is +/- 3 percentage points for the full sample.
