I have a problem. In 2007 I lost my condo to forclosure. Ever since then i have tryingt o get back on my feet. I have paid off all my debt, and my credit is now fair. i want to keep building my credit up. I need to get an apartment, but I also need to get a secured credit card to build my credit. I have no account anywhere. No auto loan, personal loan, mortgage account. Last month my credit card company lowered my balance and then close my account, even though I paid on time. No credit card debt either. I don't want too many inquires on my credit. What should i do first? Get a secured credit card or get the apartment. i want to move into my own place in January or February of 2010.

If you need to find a place to live, I would suggest you start there. You can go to the apartment manager with a copy of your credit report in hand, and ask them if you qualify. Explain you don't want them to review your credit unless you will qualify because you don't want to create an inquiry. The fact that you now have no debt may help.

Getting a secured card can help you rebuild your credit but it won't happen quickly. If you have the cash to put up for a security deposit on a secured card, go ahead and get started. But if not, then get yourself situated in your apartment first.

Please check back and tell me how it goes.
