An abstract of judgment is a judgment against you entered by the court. I understand it's frustrating for you to have to go hire a lawyer to deal with this, but I would recommend you talk with a consumer law attorney in California. If the collector did not properly serve you, or if they broke another consumer protection laws, the attorney may be able to help you get the judgment vacated. They may even be forced to pay your attorney's fees.

There is an excellent consumer law attorney in California who handles a lot of credit and debt collection cases. Robert Brennan is at www.brennanlaw.com. You can also go to www.naca.net to find an attorney with consumer law experience in your local area.
