Tough times force consumers to get creative in the kitchen
Recent surveys reveal that American consumers are making major changes to their lifestyles in order to combat the effect the recession has had on their wallets.
Consumers have, for starters, cut back on their use of credit. In doing so, many families are taking shorter vacations or staying at home altogether. In fact, households are spending increasing amounts of time in the kitchen cooking together rather than going out to eat - and finding that they are saving money in the process. This new dining-in trend is confirmed by recent figures released by Campbell's Kitchen website which reported a 60 percent increase in traffic between September 2008 and May 2009. Consumers have been flocking to the site to print recipes for healthy and affordable meals to cook at home that make enough to feed a big family. "Now more than ever people are searching for ways to stretch their food dollars," said Sean Connolly, president of Campbell USA. In doing so, consumers visiting the Campbell's Kitchen website have been particularly interested in the meals under $10 section of the online portal.
