Majority of states post increases in unemployment ratesOf the rest of the states, 13 posted a drop in their unemployment rate, while another eight recorded no change from the rate seen in September. According to BLS statistics, Michigan again led the pack when it comes to its unemployment rate, which sits at 15.1 percent. Coming in at second and third were Nevada, which posted a 13 percent rate, and Rhode Island, which saw a rate of 12.9 percent. Though Michigan saw the highest rate of unemployment, it also posted the second-highest gain in jobs at 38,600. The state with the biggest increase in jobs was Texas, which had its workforce climb by 41,700. Texas' unemployment rate came in at 8.3 percent. At 4.2 percent, the state with the lowest unemployment rate in October was North Dakota. Other states that had low unemployment rates include Nebraska (4.9 percent) and South Dakota (5 percent). Overall, the unemployment rate in the country for the month sat at 10.2 percent, and many states posted rates that were lower than that. The BLS found that 31 states had unemployment rates that were below the national average. Of course, many of these states may also have a lower population overall. Recently, the government extended unemployment benefits by 14 weeks for people without jobs all across the country. However, the number of jobless people plays into the picture as well because states with an unemployment rate of more than 8.5 percent saw benefits extended an additional 6 weeks, bringing the total to 20.
