Cabela’s is a popular American retailer that provides a wide range of outdoor sporting and recreation merchandise, including products for avid hunters, fishers, boaters, campers and basically any other activity enjoyed by outdoor enthusiasts. Publicly traded since 2004, the company has over 80 physical retail locations in the United States and Canada, a mighty-thick catalog and a strong online presence to boot.

There’s even a Cabela’s credit card for the loyal Cabela’s shopper. With this card, spending can earn points good for Cabela’s rewards. If you’re a frequent Cabela’s shopper, you may be curious if the card is a good trophy for your wallet.

Read on to learn the benefits and costs of Cabela’s credit card offerings to find out if the card is right for you.

Points for Free Outdoor Gear

Cabelas club credit card

The Cabela’s CLUB Visa Card comes in three versions — which we’ll detail below — but each card earns similar rewards. Customers can apply for the cards in one of the Cabela’s stores or online.

Before we detail what you get with the cards, it’s worth noting that store credit cards generally have lower approval requirements than traditional credit cards. So, for that reason, store credit cards may be a good tool to help you build up your credit, while rewarding you for purchases you make at your favorite store. (You can find out where your credit currently stands by viewing a free credit report snapshot on Just remember: While these cards may be easier to get, you don’t want to overload your closet with more camo gear that you really can’t afford, as the interest rates with store credit cards are often higher than traditional credit cards (more on that in a minute).

No matter which Cabela’s credit card you get, you’ll earn points toward free gear and outdoor experiences at Cabela’s. Each version of the card earns multiple points for every dollar spent on Cabela’s purchases online, in-store or through the catalog. All other purchases earn one point for every dollar spent.

Cardholders can also get access to member-only events and offers. Right now, Cabela’s is offering a bonus $25 in points upon card approval and an additional $10 in points when you make five purchases within 30 days of opening the card.

Three Tiers of Cards

As we mentioned, the Cabela’s card comes in three tiers: Classic, Silver and Black. The only variable is the amount of points earned for Cabela’s purchases and the minimum annual spending requirement. The Silver and Black versions of the card may also have stricter credit requirements.

Visa Classic: The Visa Classic version earns two points for every dollar spent at Cabela’s and Cenex gas stations and one point for every dollar spent elsewhere. There is no minimum spending requirement.

Visa Silver: The Visa Silver version earns three points for every dollar spent at Cabela’s and one point for every dollar spent elsewhere. There is a minimum $10,000 annual spending requirement to have this card.

Visa Black: The Visa Black version earns five points for every dollar spent at Cabela’s and one point for every dollar spent elsewhere. There is a minimum $25,000 annual spending requirement.

Keep in mind, these cards can all be used both at Cabela’s and anywhere Visa cards are accepted. All versions of the card have no annual fee and comes with a variable annual percentage rate (APR) of 17.09% to 26.09% on non-Cabela’s purchases and a 9.99% variable APR on all Cabela’s purchases.

The Verdict

The Cabela’s card has a nice points rewards structure for diehard Cabela’s enthusiasts. With no annual fee and a very low APR on Cabela’s purchases, the card could be a good option to use only for frequent Cabela’s spending.

But if you don’t spend thousands of dollars a year at Cabela’s, you might be better off with another option that doesn’t restrict rewards to one brand. You may also want to consider the Cabela’s CLUB Rewards program if you’re only looking to get rewarded for store spending without taking out a new credit card. However, if it’s a credit card you’re after, these Cabela’s credit cards do have a lower variable APR than many other store credit cards. Even so, cardholders may wish to pay the balance in full each month to avoid racking up interest charges.

Alternative Options: Points Rewards Credit Cards

If you’re looking to earn rewards for frequent shopping, you may want to consider an unrestricted points rewards card. You’ll still earn rewards on all purchases, but you’ll have more freedom when it’s time to redeem your points.

Here are two of our favorite unrestricted points rewards cards:

Citi ThankYou Preferred Card

Why We Picked It: The Citi ThankYou Preferred Card earns two ThankYou Points for every dollar spent on restaurants and entertainment and one ThankYou Point for every dollar spent elsewhere.
