The average American spent $2,090 on gas in 2015 (the most recent data available from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics), but many of us aren’t making the most of the money that we have to spend to get to work, drop the kids at school and take fun summer road trips. Your gas spending can come with benefits. Some gas credit cards will reward you for the money you’re inevitably going to spend at the pump.
How to Get a Gas Credit Card in 2017
Before you sign up for a gas credit card, you should know your options. There isn’t one type of gas rewards credit card — there are actually a few different kinds of credit cards you can use to earn rewards or discounts for your fuel spending.
A handful of gas credit cards are offered by major American gas station chains (Shell, Valero, BP, Chevron, Texaco, etc.) that can be a good option if you’re loyal to a particular brand. These cards generally offer some sort of fuel points or discount that can be significantly higher than a standard rewards credit card. However, some of the station-branded cards can’t be used for purchases at other retailers and because you’re trying to rack up rewards at one chain, you may not be shopping around for the best gas price overall.
You can also get a rewards credit card that offers good gas rewards in addition to rewards for other purchases. With rewards cards, you obviously want to pick a card that has a high cash-back offer for gas purchases specifically. Be on the lookout for which kinds of stations can earn you rewards. Many grocery store chains and big-box retailers like Costco have begun offering gas at a discount to their customers, and gas rewards credit cards generally limit their rewards to “standalone” stations that don’t include these retailer-tied spots. If you only fill up at non-standalone stations, these cards may not be a fit for you. Rewards cards also often require good credit scores to qualify. (You can see where your credit scores stand for free on Credit.com.)
Now that you have the lay of the land, here are some of the best gas credit cards on the market right now. These cards were picked by the Credit.com editorial team for their high rewards and best overall terms.

Why We Picked It: Costco already offers a very competitive gas price to members, often several cents less per gallon than a standalone gas station, which makes it a great deal for consumers. Plus, the 4% cash back on gas purchases makes this a pretty sweet deal if you’re filling up often and you can use those rewards for other purchases — not just on gas. (Full Disclosure: Citibank advertises on Credit.com, but that results in no preferential editorial treatment.)
Rewards Details: The Costco Anywhere Visa Card offers 4% cash back on gas purchases at other eligible gas providers (supermarkets are excluded, for example), which means you can fill up at a standalone gas station and still earn rewards with this card. That 4% back is limited to the first $7,000 spent each year, then goes down to 1% after that. You also earn 3% back on restaurants and eligible travel purchases, 2% back on Costco and Costco.com purchases and 1% back on all other spending made with the card.
