November 5 is Bank Transfer Day; do you know where your money is?

Are you fed up with the big banks? You’re not alone. Kristen Christian, an art gallery owner in Los Angeles, got fed up, too. Then she pulled her money from her big bank and deposited it into a local credit union. Sensing she was onto something, she channeled her frustration into creating a plan to send a bigger message. Her strategy? She’s designated November 5 as the day for consumers to do as she did, and make their move to credit unions en masse. She says, “I started this because I felt like many of you do. I was tired—tired of the fee increases, tired of not being able to access my money when I need to, tired of them using what little money I have to oppress my brothers & sisters. So I stood up…. Me closing my account all on my lonesome wouldn’t have made a difference to these fat cats. But each of YOU standing up with me… they can’t drown out the noise we’ll make.”

Christian joins us to talk about what motivated her organize Bank Transfer Day, and to share her experience on moving her money and becoming a credit union member. Her Bank Transfer Day page on Facebook has more than 39,000 “likes”and over 76,000 RSVPs to date.
